Carrigan Students Place at State Competition
Jordan Elder and David Pittman from Carrigan Career Center will be competing in Kansas City, Kansas, for National Skills USA Contest in late June. They won first place in Team Robotics at the State contest in April, which allows them to advance to the National Level.

Preliminary TAKS Scores Released
Preliminary TAKS test results for WFISD are in with district students out performing state counterparts in some areas by as much as 10 percentage points. Of the 27 areas tested over 9 grades, students surpassed or were equal to state results in 22 areas. Eighth grade math and science results showed WFISD students performed as much as 10% points higher than the state with fifth graders performing 7% points higher in math. The five areas where the district performed lower than the state included 9th grade math and reading by 2%, 10th grade math by 2%, and 11th grade math by 4% and 11th grade science by 2%. Final test results, after all 2nd and 3rd administrations of tests are concluded, will be released by the Texas Education Agency in late summer.
Sheppard Elementary Principal Named
Marvin Peevey has been named principal at Sheppard Elementary. Mr. Peevey is a 24 year employee of WFISD with experience as a teacher at Fannin and Huey, a facilitator and magnet coordinator at Huey, and is presently the assistant principal at Cunningham. He was named TEPSA Region 9 Assistant Principal of the Year earlier this spring.
Carrigan Students Place 2nd in State Welding Competition
Alex Metzger, Ross Jernigan, and Jose Aranda of Carrigan Career Center competed in Skills USA Team Welding at State competition in Corpus Christi. They were required to read a welding blueprint of an outdoor cooker, then build the cooker using various welding processes. They won second place beating many other noteworthy teams across the state and losing only to Midland College. They were awarded the welding machines as prizes donated from Thermadyne and Victor equipment.

WFISD Earns StormReady Community Designation
The National Weather Service has designated Wichita Falls ISD a StormReady Community. A formal recognition of this achievement was held Friday, May 9 at Hirschi High School. The designation is based on Communications, Weather Service Reception, Weather and Water Monitoring, Local Warning and Dissemination, and Preparedness. This makes Wichita Falls ISD the first, and at this time the only, school district in the nation to receive this designation. In Texas, there are 74 StormReady designations: 50 communities, 18 counties, 3 universities, 1 government site, 1 commercial site, and 1 school district (WFISD).

Academic Success Project Signing Day

Much like top high school athletes are recruited by colleges, top students in the district's Academic Success Project are wooed by colleges...many with scholarships. Modeled after athletic signing days, twenty-five high school seniors from across the district participated in the Academic Success Project's "Signing Day" for higher education institutes like Dartmouth, Kansas State, Ripon, UT, Trinity, MSU and DePauw University. These students signed their "Letter of Intent" and displayed their scholarship amounts...collectively totaling over $1.3 million.
Texas Communities in Schools Honors Orr as Superintendent of the Year
Texas Communities in Schools program honors eleven Texans every year for their commitment to students, families, and the community at large. Those being honored were selected for their contributions, length of service, and time commitment to CIS of Texas programs.The honorees were chosen by an external panel of judges from the One Star Foundation, Office of Attorney General, Texas Association of School Boards, Texas Association of Partners In Education, Texas Alliance of Child & Family Service and the Texas Association of Bilingual Education . The winners will be formally awarded at a luncheon ceremony in Austin on April 24, 2008.

2008 WFISD Purchase Art Award Winners

District 8th, 5th, and 3rd Graders Score Better than State on TAKS Reading
Ninety-three percent of WFISD 8th graders, the first group of students across the state to be under the Student Success Initiative which requires passage of TAKS to be promoted to the next grade, passed the TAKS reading test compared to 92% of Texas 8th graders. Fifty-three percent of WFISD 8th graders achieved "commended performance" compared to 51% of Texas 8th graders.
Eighty-four percent of WFISD 5th graders passed the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills Reading Test, compared to 83% of Texas 5th graders. Besides the overall passing rate, 29% of district 5th graders achieved a "commended performance" level on the test by answering at least 34 of 36 questions correctly, which is the same as the state with 29% of Texas 5th grade students at "commended" status.
Ninety percent of WFISD 3rd graders passed the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills Reading Test, referred to as TAKS, compared to 88% of Texas third graders. Besides the overall passing rate, 40% of district 3rd graders achieved a "commended performance" level on the test by answering at least 34 of 36 questions correctly, compared to 38% at the state level.

Ben Milam Students Claim First Place
Congratulations to students at Ben Milam Elementary for placing first in the District UIL meet held on February 9 at Kate Burgess Elementary. This is Ben Milam's third straight year to receive the title. Other schools to place were West Foundation who received second place and Kate Burgess who placed third.
Franklin Principal Named
Kim Meyer has been named principal at Ben Franklin Elementary beginning this June. Mrs. Meyer will replace Mr. Eddie McCauley, who is retiring this year after 32 years of service to WFISD.
Mrs. Meyer is a 15 year employee of WFISD with experience as a deaf ed. teacher, coordinator and later assistant principal at Cunningham, and is presently the principal at Sheppard AFB Elementary.

History Fair Winners
Congratulations to all of the winners at the North Texas Regional History Fair that was held on Saturday, February 23, at Kirby Junior High. All first and second place winners will compete in the Texas State History Day in Austin on May 3-4 at the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum.

Hirschi Hosts Blood Drive
On Tuesday, April 1, the Hirschi High School Student Council will host a community blood drive. It will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Hirschi's small gym. 4 Schools Receive State Award
Cunningham Elementary and Sheppard Elementary have been selected as recipients of the Distinguished Performance Schools Award while Alamo Elementary and Huey Elementary have been selected as recipients of the Distinguished Progress Schools Award. Both awards are based on outstanding academic performance that meets the criteria from the Division of the No Child Left Behind Program Coordination at the Texas Education Agency . Cunningham and Sheppard are among only 134 schools statewide to receive their award. Alamo and Huey are among only 34 schools statewide to receive their award.

Magnet School of Distinction Award
Congratulations, Lamar! Lamar IB World School has been selected for a Magnet Schools of America Award as a Magnet School of Distinction. This national award is based on a commitment to high academic standards, curriculum innovation, successful desegregation/diversity efforts, and the consistent delivery of quality services to all school stakeholders.
Recipients of the Magnet Schools of Distinction awards will be recognized at the Magnet Schools of America national conference on magnet schools in Chattanooga, Tennessee, April 28-May 1.
Change Bandit Totals
Congratulations to Cunningham Elementary and Barwise Junior High for collecting the most change in their categories for the Change Bandits program benefiting the Children's Miracle Network at United Regional. Cunningham collected $2,087.02, and Barwise collected $943.55. Over $8,500 was collected by area schools for the Children's Miracle Network.
Filing Period for School Board
The election filing period has started for WFISD school board districts 2, 3, 4 & 5. The filing period, which officially started Saturday, Feb. 9, will last until Monday, March 10. Applications are available in the WFISD Superintendent's office (Rm. 206) and the WFISD Legal Services office (Rm. 202) in the Education Center, 1104 Broad from 8 am - 5 pm Monday through Thursday and 8am - 4 pm on Friday. Election Day is May 10.
State Changes Testing Dates Due to Election
The Texas Education Agency advised all Texas school districts that student testing will be shifted in March to ensure that no exam is given the day of the state primary elections, when voters will be casting ballots in schools on March 4.
Under the new calendar, all tests scheduled for March 4-6 will be given one day later than originally scheduled. The exit-level TAKS social studies exam, which was scheduled for Friday, March 7, will be moved to Monday, March 3.

Alamo Principal Named
Congratulations to Alamo assistant principal Laura Baker who has been named principal at Alamo Elementary. Baker is a 14 year employee with the district. She taught math, social studies and 2nd grade at Sam Houston before moving to Alamo as the assistant principal in January 2004. She served as assistant principal under Mr. Dalton Clark for 4 1/2 years.
MLK Art Centerpiece Contest
For 8 years, WFISD students have created inspirational art pieces to decorate the tables at the MLK breakfast. This year, over 115 centerpieces were submitted representing 13 schools and more than 325 students. Art classes, homerooms, and social studies classes from across the district entered artwork.

Senior Send-Off
Coordinated by Partners In Education, this mini-conference is a signature program designed to give high school seniors the opportunity to attend workshops such as "Preparing a Resume That Works," "Life Happens - Taking Charge of Your Financial Future" and "You're Hired - Now What?" Senior Send-Off will be held on Tuesday, January 15 at the M.P.E.C. Participating in this year's program are seniors from Wichita Falls High School.
January is School Board Appreciation Month
Governor Rick Perry has proclaimed the month of January as School Board Recognition Month and Wichita Falls ISD is joining other districts across the state to gratefully acknowledge local trustees' unfailing commitment to our communities and schools. Click herefor more information.
The WFISD Board will be recognized at a reception prior to the regular school board meeting on Thursday, January 24 at 5:00 pm in the foyer of the Education Center.
WFISD Music Students Selected to Perform in Texas "All-State" Bands and Choirs
Five WFISD high school music students have been selected to perform with the Texas "All-State" bands, choirs, or orchestras in San Antonio, on Saturday, February 16 , as part of the 2008 Texas Music Educators Association Clinic/Convention. These students were chosen for the hono, r in competitive auditions held this year across the state at district, region, pre-area, and area level audition.
Performing in the 1A/2A/3A ATSSB Band will be Alex Reis (Contra Bass Clarinet) from Hirschi High School. Performing in the 4A Band/Orchestra will be Allison Banks (Trombone) and Stephanie Ginnings (Horn, 3rd year) from Rider High School. Performing in the Woman's Choir will be Ayrian Boyd (Alto I) from Rider High School. Performing in the Men's Choir will be Zach Haskin (Bass II) from Rider High School. Additionally, David Grayson (Alto Saxophone) from Rider High School was selected as an alternate to the 4A Band/Orchestra.
The TMEA audition process begins in mid October with approximately 30,000 high school music students competing in region-level competitions across the state of Texas. Auditions conclude in January with area-level competitions. A total of 1,400 Texas students are selected from the final round of auditions to perform in ten different All-State ensembles.
Citigroup awards $25,000 to benefit Science Teachers
For the second year in a row, the Wichita Falls ISD Foundation Inc has received another Citigroup Success Fund Grant in the amount of $25,000 that benefits teachers and students in the area of science. Wichita Falls ISD was one of only three Texas school districts to receive the grant. Bryan ISD and Abilene ISD were the other two Texas districts. Click here for more information.

WFISD schools earned 67 Texas Education Agency Gold Performance Acknowledgments because an increasing percentage of students reached the prestigious Commended Performance level or achieved Comparable Improvement on the 2007 TAKS test (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills). Personnel Changes Effective January 3, 2008
Congratulations to the following principals in their new leadership positions beginning January 3, 2008:
- Linda Nichols, principal at Kate Burgess, will be the new principal at Denver Alternative Center replacing David Anderson who is the new assistant director of Special Education.
- Dalton Clark, principal at Alamo, will be the new principal at Kate Burgess. Laura Baker, current assistant principal at Alamo, will serve as interim principal at A, lamo until the principal position is filled per job posting.
