One Good Deed Leads to Another
{check pres}
Recently, while the Zundy Student Council was decorating the Christmas Tree for their PIE partner, Wichita Falls Teachers Federal Credit Union, one of the students asked Pat Murray, the president of the credit union, about the little angels that were hanging from the tree. He told the students that they represented needy children. He explained to that people could buy a gift for one of these kids, so they could have a Merry Christmas, too. The students asked him if they could make this a school project and adopt as angels. Mr. Murray and Zundy Principal Chad Brewster were all for it, so the students took off and collectively raised $600.00 for these needy children.

Texas Monthly Recognizes Alamo, Bonham, Cunningham as "Best Public Schools"
Congratulations to Alamo, Bonham, and Cunningham Elementary Schools who were named to Texas Monthly's "Best Public Schools" list in the December issue. The Texas Monthly analysis, performed by the National Center for Educational Accountability national sponsor of Just for the Kids, named only 12% of elementary, 13% of middle, and 8% of high schools across the state to the listing. For elementary schools, the analysis was based on students' actual scale scores on the TAKS test, not just on whether they passed. The analysis took into account the range of performance and improvement of students who were performing well above or below the passing level. In addition, the Texas Monthly list is based on three years of data- for the 2004-05, 2005-06, and 2006-07 school years.

Change in Testing for Scholastic Awards
Each year our district recognizes 10 sophomores, 10 juniors, and 10 seniors with a scholastic award. In accordance with Administration Regulation EG, “the scholastic award is designed to recognize and honor those students who demonstrate high academic achievement as measured by a composite score encompassing both letter grades and scores on an assessment test. Scholastic award winners shall be determined by a composite weighted score that shall combine school grade point average and an assessment test score”.
The exact formula for the calculation of grades and the rules for eligibility are posted on the WFISD website by accessing departments, then clicking on Legal, and finally clicking on regulations.
This year will be the last time that the Scholastic Award test will be given as the assessment test score. For the 2008-09 school year and thereafter, the assessment test score to be used will be the composite score received from the PSAT in the fall of the student’s previous year combined with the grade point calculation formula in regulation FG from the student’s spring semester. If the student then meets the eligibility criteria in regulation FG, and has one of the top ten scores, he/she will receive a scholastic award.
Wichita Falls ISD Earns State's Highest Fiscal Accountability Rating
for Fifth Year in a Row
Wichita Falls Independent School District officials announced that the district received a rating of "Superior Achievement" under Texas' Schools FIRST financial accountability rating system. The Superior Achievement rating is the state's highest, demonstrating the quality of Wichita Falls ISD's financial management and reporting system.
This is the fifth year of Schools FIRST (Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas), a financial accountability system for Texas school districts developed by the Texas Education Agency in response to Senate Bill 218 of the 77th Texas Legislature in 2001. The District has received a "Superior Achievement" every year. The primary goal of Schools FIRST is to achieve quality performance in the management of school districts' financial resources, a goal made more significant due to the complexity of accounting associated with Texas' school finance system. The system is designed to encourage Texas public schools to manage their financial resources better in order to provide the maximum allocation possible for direct instructional purposes.

School Accountability Ratings
The Texas Education Agency has released the 2007 Accountability Ratings for all Texas schools. WFISD increased its number of Exemplary schools from 3 in 2006 to 5 in 2007. Eight schools received the Recognized rating and 13 were rated Acceptable. There were no low performing campuses.
While the number of Recognized schools dropped from last year's 15, some of the movement occurred due to state student achievement standards being raised for Recognized status and 2 more schools achieving Exemplary ratings.
Below is a listing of ratings:
-
Alamo, Cunningham, Huey, McGaha, and Sheppard Elementary schools rated Exemplary meaning that 90% of all students and all student groups taking the TAKS passed reading, math, and writing. WFISD increased its number of Exemplary schools from 3 in 2005 to 5 in 2007.
-
Fain, Fowler, Haynes, Jefferson, Lamar, Milam, and West Foundation Elementary and Zundy Jr. High were rated Recognized meaning that students and student groups taking the TAKS met the 75% passing standard for reading, math, science and writing.
