Red Hot Radical Readers
· Developing better reading skills
· Increasing the number of students achieving their goals
· Recognizing students who achieve their goals
· Encouraging parents to support their students’ progress
· Making reading fun!
Students meet with their teachers to set an attainable reading goal during the established reading period. A school rally is held where grade-level reading cheers are presented, and then one cheer is selected to represent the entire school at the all-school rally. A local disc jockey facilitates the rally, which encourages students to achieve their goals and to reinforce the importance of reading.
All participating schools gather at an all-school rally scheduled at the end of the reading period to showcase the cheer of their choice. The students who reach their goal also receive a Red Hot Radical Readers T-Shirt. The following school day is designated “Red Hot Radical Readers Day,” and the students wear their T-Shirts to observe their achievements and to celebrate reading.
Red Hot Radical Readers began in 1993 as Readers Are Winners and has since been sponsored by the Wichita Falls Kiwanis Club, Coca-Cola Bottling Company, 92.9 NIN, and McDonald’s. Perdue Brandon Fielder Collins & Mott is also a decade-long sponsor. Red Hot Radical Readers is proud to have these entities as funders AND as active participants in the annual reading incentive program.
