West Award for Teaching Excellence

Cunningham teacher among the best
 Kim Thorne
Cunningham teacher Kim Thorne is one of 20 recipients of the prestigious West Award for Teaching Excellence for 2014.

WFISD announced each win Sept. 29 when Associate Superintendent Mike Kuhrt surprised each winner in his or her classroom and delivered a balloon bouquet.

Ms. Thorne teaches deaf education for grades 3 through 6 at Cunningham, specializing in English Language Arts and math. She has been a teacher for four years.

The award comes with $5,000.

The West Award, presented by the West Foundation, is especially coveted because the West Foundation chooses the teachers it believes are the district’s best. It doesn’t limit itself to any other parameters, such as balancing out selections from every school, grade, subject or experience level.

It chooses recipients who show high moral character, a positive attitude, enthusiasm, poise and dedication to the craft of teaching. The West Foundation also values teachers who continue learning and improving. The campus principal nominates each applicant.

Ms. Thorne is known for incorporating real-life economic issues into her classroom. Students learn to maintain checking and savings accounts and how to write and deposit checks.

Ms. Thorne also teaches a sign language class for Cunningham parents and community members.

The West Foundation will serve the winners a special dinner Oct. 21 at the Wellington Banquet and Conference Center at 5200 Kell Blvd.

The West Foundation has been honoring WFISD teachers with its West Teaching Excellence Awards since 1983. Since that time, it has recognized approximately 620 teachers for their teaching excellence.
