A Message from the Superintendent
WFISD Schools Closed to Campus-Based Instruction Through the Remainder of the 2019-2020 School Year.
Dear Wichita Falls ISD Families,
We find ourselves in unprecedented times. I watch the news just like you do, and I am sure I have just as many questions and concerns as you do. While I don't have all the answers, I can assure you that we have an awesome team in place that is ready to take on this challenge and continue meeting the needs of our students in Wichita Falls.
In times like these, we realize how big of a role the public school system plays in a community. We are a learning institution; we are a community service organization; we are a food distribution center; we are a healthcare facility; we are a public transportation hub. Thus, we are so much more than just a public school district!
As many businesses and activities around town stop or slow down, the staff in WFISD has continued to work around the clock to meet the needs of their students. Our custodial staff has thoroughly cleaned all district facilities. Our child nutrition department and Chartwells has prepared and served thousands of meals in just the first week. Our bus drivers have delivered meals to students who would have no other way to get food. Our counselors are making phone calls to students who have reached out for help during these times of uncertainty. Our curriculum team has developed two weeks worth of online instruction for all grade levels in less than a week. Our campus leaders have designed virtual spirit weeks to get students excited and engaged with daily activities. And...our teachers have also stepped up to the plate in a big way. On their days off, they were planning. They were creating Google Classrooms. They were driving through their students' neighborhoods just so their kids could see a familiar face! And, since they have been back on duty, our teachers have attempted to make contact with over 14,000 WFISD students. In a nutshell, Team WFISD is amazing!
This is an unprecedented situation. As we begin to embark on a way of learning, I want assure our students and their families of the following:
- I believe that families are doing their best to take care of their children during this difficult time.
- I commit to providing at-home learning opportunities and resources for our students to support their education while WFISD school buildings are closed.
- I recognize that there are unique circumstances in every home that may impact a student’s ability to learn during this challenging situation.
- I will be patient and support all of our students to the best of my ability during this pandemic. In turn, I ask for your patience with our WFISD teachers and staff who are doing their absolute best to take care of our students in the midst of the challenges caused for them and their families by COVID-19.
The resilience that is demonstrated in Wichita Falls each time there is a crisis is always amazing. This is no different. Please stay connected with us on social media, and we will do our best to communicate with you often with the most accurate and up to date information. Stay safe and join with us as we all practice healthy habits and do our part to flatten the curve.
