Project Back to School

What is Project Back to School?

Project Back to School was founded in 2009 after Cheryl Ritchie, while volunteering at Scotland Park Elementary, recognized a gap in access to school supplies that existing programs could not meet. Joined by dedicated community volunteers, the initiative has spent the past 15 years supporting at-risk students and advancing a shared belief that education is one of the most powerful tools for breaking the cycle of poverty. Our vision is that no child in Wichita Falls begins school without the supplies they need. Today, with 3 out of every 5 local students classified as economically disadvantaged, that mission is more critical than ever. Each August, we equip approximately 6,000 children for academic success by distributing school supplies directly at the highest-need schools and through our annual Back to School Roundup. Every student at WFISD elementary schools with more than 95% economically disadvantaged enrollment—Burgess, Scotland Park, Booker T. Washington, and Zundy—receives a backpack and supplies on their campus. Additionally, all qualifying WFISD and CVISD students are invited to attend the Roundup to receive free school supplies and backpacks. Join us in making our vision a reality so every child in Wichita Falls is prepared to succeed.
