Health Alert: Increase in Pertussis Cases in Texas
The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is reporting an increase in pertussis cases in 2024.
Pertussis also known as whooping cough, what is it?
Whooping cough is a respiratory illness caused by a type of bacteria called Bordetella pertussis.
Whooping cough bacteria attach to the cilia (tiny, hair-like extensions) that line part of the upper respiratory system. The bacteria release toxins (poisons), which damage the cilia and cause airways to swell.
Whooping cough (pertussis) is a highly contagious respiratory tract infection. In many people, it's marked by a severe hacking cough followed by a high-pitched intake of breath that sounds like "whoop."

Preventive Measures
Like many other illnesses, having good health habits can reduce the spread of pertussis. Properly wash your hands with soap and water often, especially if you come into contact with an infected individual. Always cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing and clean your hands afterward. Staying home when you are sick will help prevent the spread of infectious respiratory diseases
