Medicine Administration in School
New Policy Regarding - Over the Counter Medication (OTC) Administration in School (August 14, 2024)
Recent changes enacted by the Texas Board of Nursing have established new rules surrounding school nurses and their ability to administer over-the-counter medications. Effective immediately OTC medications must have a doctors order.
Prescription & Over-The-Counter (OTC) Medications
Upon a parent's written request, all prescription and nonprescription medications presented to the school clinic for administration by a campus nurse must be accompanied by a valid doctor's order and in accordance with the following:
- Prescription and nonprescription medication in accordance with legal requirements.
- Nonprescription medication must be properly labeled in an unopened-sealed original container.
- Prescription medications must be a prescription bottle from the pharmacy properly labeled with the child’s name, physician, name of the medication and direction for time and dosage. The pharmacy can supply two (2) labeled bottles for this purpose.
- Medications lacking such documentation shall not be accepted nor administered.
- Medications sent in baggies or unlabeled containers will not be given.
- Medication will not be accepted if the prescription label has been altered by hand.
A completed request signed by a parent/legal guardian and by the ordering physician/licensed prescriber must be presented with the properly labeled medication prior to administration.
Prescription Medication Request Form
Medications given at school must be brought to the school by the parent/guardian or an adult designee (18 years of age or older and not a current WFISD student).
Medications are stored in the nurse’s office in a locked cabinet and are supervised at all times.
If your child is prescribed emergency rescue medication and you would like for them to self-carry and self-administer while at school or school functions, please fill out the medication self-carry agreement along with the prescription medication request form and turn it back into your campus nurse.
