Give your 4-year-old a boost in reading skills before entering kindergarten. WFISD is the first school district in Texas to offer Upstart, a free, in-home reading-readiness program. There are openings now for children who will celebrate their 4th birthday on or before Sept. 1, 2018. This unique program is offered in partnership with Waterford Institute, a nonprofit research center known for its specialized reading programs.
Right now, WFISD is searching for eligible families to take advantage of this remarkable opportunity!
How does participation work? Eligible students receive a Chromebook and wifi internet access if the family does not already have it. Then a parent joins his child five days a week on the Chromebook in a fun, 20-minute online program that introduces the child to reading, math and science – all with a reading emphasis.
WFISD teacher Charisse Humphreys and her 4-year-old son, Nathan, were part of Upstart’s first cohort of participants. They worked together five nights a week on his Upstart-provided Chromebook. “He loves bringing his stuffed animals to learn with him,” said Mrs. Humphreys.
Your child will qualify if:
You live in the WFISD attendance zone or surrounding area
Your child will be 4 years old on or before September 1, 2018
Your child is not enrolled in Head Start or a WFISD Pre-K program for the 2018-2019 school year
