Parenting for Success

Find new ideas, new motivation in upcoming conference

As far as conferences go, it’s short. Just seven hours.

But the Parenting for Success conference, which is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 24, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Vernon College at 4105 Maplewood in Wichita Falls, will take parents a long way toward their goals of parenting more effectively.

Wichita Falls ISD, Vernon College, the Coalition for Hispanic Education and the African American Education Coalition are working together to bring the event to Wichita Falls. The collaboration is designed to help parents, who are always essential partners in the education process, to ignite student achievement

Keynote speaker is Lucy V. Cantu.

Ms. Cantu grew up in poverty, then juggled motherhood and a career. But she credits “a wake-up call” that changed her direction and landed her in the field of personal and spiritual development. She learned to overcome her own personal limitations and then realized how much she enjoyed helping others overcome their biggest limitations.

She’ll share her lessons that will challenge and inspire parents from all backgrounds.

The conference will also feature breakout sessions hosted by each sponsoring organization.

WFISD will lead a session teaching parents how to make a creative learning space for their children. A fully stocked desk in a child’s bedroom is old school; today’s child needs a mobile homework caddie that can go with him to the babysitter’s house, Grandma’s house, or from the kitchen table to the living room. Debbie Gonzalez will present ideas that will make homework easier at all grade levels.

Other breakout sessions will target literacy, technology, early childhood milestones, and creative ways to be involved with your children.

The Hispanic Coalition for Education was formed in 2013 by a group of community leaders who organized to advocate for Hispanic youth.

WFISD is the largest school district in North Texas. It serves about 14,000 children.

Vernon College is a fully accredited, comprehensive community college offering 42 career paths and serves about 3,100 students. VC prepares students for employment or for transfer to a four-year college or university.
