Seven WFISD seniors -- five from Rider High School and two from Hirschi High School -- earned the title “Commended Student” in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program.

They were counted among the top 50,000 scorers out of 1.6 million test-takers in the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

The five qualifying Rider High School students are Justin Williams, Andrew Fry, Matthew Spears, Leah Schrass, Caroline Clarke. The two qualifying Hirschi High School students are Sankirthana "Kirthi" Malireddy and Andi Newberry.

To qualify as a Commended Student, their scores on the PSAT taken during their junior year fell at or above the Commended Student Selection Index score but below their state or selection unit’s Semifinalist Selection Index score.

Students who earn a Semifinalist title and score in the top 16,000 of test-takers continue on in the scholarship contest; Commended Students do not.
