WFISD Becomes First Texas School District to Host New 'Upstart' Pre-Reading Program

"" ""

WFISD is the first Texas school district to pilot a new pre-reading program called Upstart, according to Superintendent Mike Kuhrt. He announced the new initiative in Tuesday's board work session. To launch the program in January, he is searching for 100 families with 4-year-olds who are not currently enrolled in any pre-K, Head Start, or child care program, but who agree to accept a free Chromebook and wifi access from the District and use it to work their child through a special pre-reading program. Participating parents must agree to spend 15 minutes daily with their 4-year-olds in the online program. The initiative helps parents become their child's first teachers and prepares children to read before they show up for their first day of kindergarten. The program is fully funded during Year 1 (2017-2018) by the West Foundation; it will be funded by Intuit founder Scott Cook in 2018-2019. WFISD board members approved the launch Tuesday in a 6-0 vote.
